Orient Express Travels & Tours was established on 26th Sep, 1947 by Mr. Shyam Poddar, a great visionary and pioneer. He had a dream to put India on the world tourism map and devoted his life towards making this a reality. He also had the unique distinction of putting the lost and forgotten temples of Khajuraho and the region of Shekhawati on the world map. He was the first speaker, invited from India, to speak at ASTA Convention at Washington in 1950. Mr. Shyam Poddar also had the distinction of being the first Indian to be on the Board of Directors of PATA and was the founder member of the SKAL Club, Delhi. Mr. Poddar not only worked towards bringing India on the world map of tourism, but played a pioneering role in opening up Nepal as a tourist destination by taking a group of foreign tourists to Nepal in 1953. Under his guidance, Orient Express Travels & Tours was the first travel company to diversify into the Hotel business by building the well known five star deluxe hotel – Taj Chandela at Khajuraho.
Orient Express Travels & Tours is the first travel company in India to receive a highly prestigious honor by the royalty of a foreign country. The King of Belgium, His Majesty “ Majeste Le Roi Albert II” honored the company in 2003 for its more than 50 years of continued business relationship with Belgium.
